CASA DE LAS AMÉRICAS – LA HABANA, CUBA / FESTIVAL DE CINE DE LA HABANA 2025:
“(…) At Casa de las Américas in Havana, Cuba, we held a literary panel dedicated to the immense Puerto Rican poet and activist Julia de Burgos to rediscover her life and work (…)
Puerto Rican documentary filmmaker Álvaro Calderón Martínez presented his film "Julia Lives," a project that blends documentary and narrative to bring to the present the Julia who did not die in 1953. This work seeks to position her in the present, celebrating the self-taught intellectual, rural educator, poet, and journalist who, in just 39 years of public life, changed everything.
We are talking about a woman who paved the way for future generations, with an internationalist vision and a social struggle that beats in every verse and every act of rebellion. A necessary dialogue between Cuba and Puerto Rico, between research and film, to remember that #JuliaLives in our collective memory and in the struggle that continues.”
MISIÓN DE PUERTO RICO EN CUBA / FESTIVAL DE CINE DE LA HABANA 2025:
“Excellent participation by documentary filmmaker Álvaro Calderón from Puerto Rico, with his previously unreleased work ‘Julia Lives,’ at Casa de las Américas in Havana, Cuba, presented by Vice President Jaime Gómez Triana and preceded by a discussion with experts on the subject.
Julia de Burgos (1914-1953), to mention just one attribute, was the most outstanding Puerto Rican poet, with strong ties to Cuba. The documentary reveals her full dimension as a pioneering and patriotic woman.
Congratulations and many thanks for your contribution to Latin American culture, Álvaro Calderón Martínez!”
